Still Life

Still Life

Still life is a bit of a peculiar idea. I assume it means it’s life, it’s there but it’s dead. it’s still, it’s objects. Are flowers still life? When they’re picked are they dead?

Choosing of the subject is very often for the relationship between objects rather than the objects themselves. The colour relationships. Although it is fascinating to look at things like glass I’m searching once again for the strangeness of the colours, of pigments in a jar because they’re not what you normally see in a jar. Jam in a jar but not this. I like the shapes as well of the bottles and looking at the dramatic shape of them on the canvass

In a small painting called “Moving on”, there is a further change. The objects are becoming patches of colour with their relationship to each other being of most importance. I call this kind of painting a “link painting”, because it is linking with other groups of paintings.
